Tottenham Hotspur loanee Joe Rodon impressed in a Man of the Match performance for Rennes on Sunday as his side drew 1-1 against second-placed Marseille in Ligue 1.

The Lowdown: Conte’s praise

Antonio Conte was full of praise for the Welshman’s attitude earlier this year, having claimed that he is not only ‘a good player, but a really, really great man’.

However, the 24-year-old has made just five appearances for Spurs under their current boss, including a 54-minute outing in the Europa Conference League against NS Mura last year.

Former Lilywhites boss Jose Mourinho also heaped praise on the player upon his arrival at Hotspur Way in 2020, having proclaimed that he loves the defender’s potential and mentality.

The Latest: Rodon’s performance

Rodon played a full 90 minutes for Rennes on Sunday as his side drew 1-1 against Ligue 1 title contenders Marseille.

During the game, the 24-year-old made seven clearances, also blocking three shots and intercepting the ball on three occasions. He also undertook eight duels – two on the ground and six in the air – and the Wales international came out having dominated seven of these challenges (via SofaScore).

As a result, Rodon was awarded a statistical match rating of 7.6, and he was even awarded Man of the Match by French outlet Foot Mercato.

The Verdict: Proving a point to Conte

With Rodon slowly but surely getting back on his feet in Ligue 1, it would be a surprise to see Rennes pass up the option to make the defender’s move permanent at the end of the season based on his current form, which they have the ability to do for £16.7m.

Having joined Tottenham two years ago for £11m, a fee which would subsequently rise to £15m with add-ons, the Welshman has not experienced the career that he would have hoped for when he first arrived at Hotspur Way.

Having made just 24 senior appearances for Spurs, it appeared that his tenure with the Premier League club may have been over.

However, while Spurs were breached twice by rock-bottom Leicester on Saturday, performances like his one at the weekend suggest that he is very eager to prove a point to Conte and try to forge his way back into the Italian's plans in N17.
