Speaking in a pre-match press conference, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed ‘bad news’ for defender Toby Alderweireld as he is set to miss tonight’s game as well as the weekend encounter with Chelsea in the Premier League – with Spurs now without a crucial enforcer at the back.
Alderweireld, who helped Tottenham thwart attack after attack during their 2-0 victory over Man City during their last outing, went down with a muscular injury near the end of the match.
Indeed, the Belgian was then taken off amid fears from Mourinho that it could’ve been something severe – but thankfully, as confirmed by the gaffer, he could only miss two-four weeks and not over a month as first feared.
Alderweireld blow confirmed
However, he will miss tonight’s encounter with Ludogorets as well as a crucial clash with London rivals Chelsea, with Mourinho shedding light on the ‘bad news’ in his press conference.
“[Toby] has a muscular injury but not as big as we initially thought,” explained the Spurs boss.
“He will have time to be out but not like a month which is what we immediately thought. So I would say between two and four weeks. But of course he is not playing tomorrow,”
“Of course bad news as he was playing his best football. He is an important player that we miss, but we have Davinson Sanchez and not for tomorrow, as he is not in the list, we have Joe Rodon. We fight with what we have.”
Transfer Tavern take
Sanchez, who Mourinho reportedly doesn’t trust, will now have to come back into the fold alongside Eric Dier for tonight’s clash as summer signing Rodon is not eligible to play.
Whether or not this spells trouble remains to be seen, but Tottenham should have enough strength in depth to see it through.
