Speaking to the press, Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Toby Alderweireld will return to the line up to play Wolfsberger this afternoon – coming after he was an unused substitute during their dismal defeat to West Ham United at the weekend.
Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier started as the centre-back pairing for Tottenham as Mourinho’s men succumbed to a 2-1 London Derby defeat.
Jose Mourinho confirms Alderweireld return for Spurs
Michail Antonio and Jesse Lingard goals were enough to clinch a hard-earned three points for the Hammers, with Lucas Moura’s header threatening a potential Spurs comeback, but to no avail.
Ahead of Tottenham’s second leg Europa League tie against Wolfsberger this afternoon, Mourinho has confirmed that Alderweireld will return to the side after he was rotated.
“It’s impossible to play the same players all the time,” explained the Spurs boss (via football.london).
“Of course we have different competitions and of course we tried to have some fresh players for different matches.
“Of course when there is no perfection in the collective performances sometimes you try to provide some stability but other times you need to rotate some players.
“For example Toby didn’t play on Sunday, he plays tomorrow. That’s quite an obvious situation.”
Transfer Tavern take
Despite Tottenham already having one foot in the Last 16 after their 4-1 dismantling of Wolfsberger in the first leg, Alderweireld’s return could help to ease Spurs through as Mourinho also names a collective of barely-seen youngsters on his bench.
Lauded as a ‘phenomenal’ player and the ‘best defender’ at Spurs by pundit Noel Whelan recently (Football Insider), it will be interesting to see who else gets to feature this evening.
