According to an injury update from the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur will still be without Erik Lamela for the Premier League clash against Crystal Palace this afternoon – with the Argentine currently in recovery from a calf injury as Jose Mourinho gears up for a congested fixture schedule.
Lamela, who was ruled out for the foreseeable future after picking up a knock in early November, still hasn’t returned and will not feature against Palace – with it apparently being unlikely that he will return this side of Christmas.
Spurs without Lamela
When last asked about the ‘amazing‘ attacker’s fitness, Mourinho remained vague over the date for his comeback and hinted that he hopes to have him back in the next few weeks after he returned to training.
After this update, it is now confirmed he will not feature again today as the date for his return remains unknown – with Mourinho ideally wanting a fully fit squad of players to choose from as a plethora of matches loom throughout December.
Tottenham will not have to play a Europa League match until February after topping Group J, but those encounters have been replaced by mid-week Premier League fixtures and domestic cup games.
Transfer Tavern take
As Lamela looks set to be out, potentially over this next week for the games against both Liverpool and Leicester City, Mourinho will have Steven Bergwijn and Gareth Bale to choose from on the right-hand side.
The Portuguese has so far favoured Bergwijn domestically as he looks to gently ease Bale into the team, with Spurs’ marquee summer loan signing starting just one English top flight match so far.
It remains to be seen how Lamela’s return could impact the squad but Mourinho will not have that dilemma today as he remains unavailable.
