Speaking to Football Insider, a Lilywhites source has explained that La Liga giants Real Madrid have made an approach to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Tanguy Ndombele.
The Lowdown: Ndombele much improved…
Despite the Frenchman being dropped for his recent form by interim boss Ryan Mason, it is no secret that Ndombele has improved hugely on his first full season at Tottenham.
Indeed, the 24-year-old’s underwhelming debut campaign for Spurs famously resulted in a sit-down with chairman Daniel Levy, which was broadcast on Amazon Prime during the ‘All or Nothing‘ series.
Fast forward to the 2020/21 season and Ndombele has been imperious at times. After his spectacular goal away to Sheffield United, former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho lauded the midfielder as ‘magnificent’ for reviving his north London career (Daily Mail).
The Latest: Real Madrid make approach…
However, Ndombele’s future appears to be up in the air, and Real Madrid are now interested in snapping up Tottenham’s club record signing.
As explained by a Tottenham source, speaking to Football Insider, the La Liga giants have now approached Spurs over signing Ndombele this summer, with Levy and co aware of their ‘strong’ interest. However, as of yet, the London club are not prepared to listen to offers for him.
If they were to sell him this summer, Football Insider explained that Tottenham would want to recuperate the £54m they paid to bring him to north London.
The Verdict: Refuse at all costs…
Spurs need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy this summer in order to bring in a much-needed centre-half among other positions, but selling a talent like Ndombele could definitely be the wrong decision.
Ndombele thrived in the number 10 position earlier this season, back when Moussa Sissoko and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg would sit behind him and protect the back four. His creativity in tight spaces, low centre of gravity and unique intelligence on the ball at times could point to a much-needed creative outlet for Tottenham.
If the Lilywhites are to keep hold of Ndombele, they will need to start playing him more, with Mason omitting him from the team sheet in each of Tottenham’s last two Premier League games.
According to Declan Rice, some Spurs players believe that the Frenchman’s talent is ‘unbelievable‘, and Levy may not want a fight on his hands to fend off worthy suitors this summer.
