Noel Whelan has claimed that there is a ‘trust issue’ between Gareth Bale and Jose Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur after he was an unused substitute versus Chelsea.
The former Manchester United boss has not had the best relationship with Dele Alli so far in the 2020/21 term, as he took another subtle dig at the England international after the 1-0 loss to Thomas Tuchel’s team, with the attacking midfield player barely featuring having played in only a mere 12 games in all competitions in total (Transfermarkt).
Should Spurs start Bale?
However, Whelan has claimed to Football Insider that there is also an issue between Bale and Mourinho:
“There’s a problem there, there is an issue, there’s an underlying issue there between manager and player again, very much like Dele Alli.
“I’ve got no idea what’s going on, there’s a trust issue, there’s a battle of egos out there somehow, that’s not working. Why has Gareth Bale been brought in if he’s not going to be used?
“He was wanted for years and now they managed to get him and they don’t even put him on in a massive game to get back into a game. Now, even Real Madrid did that and Tottenham aren’t.
“There’s something massive going wrong there between the connection of manager and player and we don’t know what it is, but there’s a huge issue, there’s a huge issue there. I can’t see him being there at the club come the end of the season.
“I do not think they’ll take up that option of buying him and I’m pretty sure Gareth Bale won’t take up the option of wanting to stay if the season carries on this way for him.”
Bale move has not worked out for Spurs
The move to bring Bale back to Spurs on loan from Real Madrid has not really worked out thus far.
The Wales international has only scored four goals in 15 matches in all competitions this season, and has mostly been a bit-part player having only completed the full 90 minutes once (Transfermarkt).
Having been a superstar for the North London club previously, one may have expected the 31-year-old to have been given more chances under Mourinho, but it seems as if he is not impressing his coach enough to warrant more playing time.
Bale needs to put in some much better displays in a Lilywhites shirt given the high standards that he has set himself prior.
