Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of Tottenham’s final Europa League group stage encounter with Royal Antwerp this evening, Jose Mourinho confirmed that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will be rested – going on to say ‘now is his time‘ to recuperate.
Hojbjerg, who has started plethora of matches in all competitions this campaign, and all of Tottenham’s Premier League encounters, will be allowed to rest on the sidelines as Mourinho refuses to risk his fitness.
The midfield dynamo has slotted into the Spurs midfield effortlessly since signing from Southampton in the summer, arguably becoming their most fruitful signing of the summer window.
Hojbjerg set for recovery
As a result, he has been utilised often with little recovery in-between, and Spurs supporters could have briefly feared the worst when he didn’t come out for training on Wednesday.
Mourinho quickly put injury fears to bed and confirmed he will sit out at Antwerp as the ‘real deal‘ needs time to recuperate before a tricky trip to Selhurst Park on Sunday.
“Pierre, no problems, it is just the fact that he is playing every match,” explained the Spurs boss.
“He played last week three matches of 90 minutes, played Thursday in Austria and played and he played against Arsenal again. Now is his time, because we always try to give a rest to one or another player.”
Transfer Tavern take
As Tottenham aim to keep their place at the Premier League summit, this could be a wise move by Mourinho.
The last thing Spurs want is losing one of their talisman to injury, with Hojbjerg now set for a well-deserved lay off with a view to returning to Premier League action at 100 per cent capacity.
