Speaking to Football Insider, talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has claimed that Jose Mourinho could be ‘scared’ of utilising Serge Aurier ahead of Man City’s visit to north London – going on to say that this selection dilemma is ‘frustrating’ the manager.
Aurier, who has shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, ever since Spurs completed the summer signing of Matt Doherty, features regularly under Mourinho in the right-back slot.
Indeed, both him and the Irishman appear to rotate consistently – with the two defenders currently battling for a place as Tottenham’s number one right back.
The Ivorian has impressed with a few showings already this season, helping to put Man United to the sword during Spurs’ devastating 6-1 victory at Old Trafford.
Aurier even got on the scoresheet that game, putting in a Man of the Match performance, but according to pundit Agbonlahor, Mourinho will still have a problem with the 27-year-old.
“I watched the Spurs documentary and I think Jose Mourinho summed it up on there when he said ‘I’m scared of you giving away a penalty or a set piece’ because he has that in him, he can switch off at times,” he explained to Football Insider.
“When he’s fully switched on he’s a great defender and going forward he’s not too bad either.
“But sometimes, when the opposition are doing a one-two he’ll switch off and they’ll get in behind him and that’s what’s frustrating for Jose Mourinho and that’s why he’s not probably played as much this season.”
Transfer Tavern take
Despite his inconsistency defensively at times, Aurier could still put in a solid display against the Sky Blues.
Often erratic, as fans have pointed out in the past, they will be hoping for a performance similar to that of his exploits against the red half of Manchester.
