Speaking in his press conference, Jose Mourinho confirmed that Serge Aurier will miss Tottenham’s clash with Royal Antwerp this evening in a late blow – going on to claim he has a ‘problem’ sustained from the north London derby win last weekend.
Aurier, who is been a favourite of Mourinho’s for big games, looks set to miss out as Spurs prepare for their final group stage clash against Antwerp.
Aurier to miss clash
The Ivorian has looked like a transformed man under the Portuguese boss this season, even being favoured ahead of summer signing Matt Doherty at large points during this campaign, but he will not feature against Antwerp due to a ‘problem’ picked up against Arsenal.
Tottenham have more or less qualified on goal difference, but this match will determine who will finish top of the group and take an advantage heading into the round of 32.
Antwerp beat Spurs 1-0 during their last encounter, and Mourinho will be hoping to avoid a repeat of that forgettable night in Belgium.
Speaking ahead of the match, Mourinho confirmed that Aurier will not take part.
“Serge will miss the game, yes, because he had that problem before Arsenal. He is still not completely recovered, he had a reaction from the game.”
Transfer Tavern take
Despite this coming as a late setback, Doherty is a more-than-adequate backup option to face Antwerp and he is more than capable of doing the required job as Tottenham aim to top Group J.
Whether or not they finish tonight as group winners remains to be seen, but regardless, the Lilywhites can still look forward to the knockout stages.
