The Lowdown: Spurs in negotiations
Antonio Conte is believed to have a right wing-back high up on his transfer wishlist this summer, and the 21-year-old is someone who the Lilywhites have been targeting for quite some time after watching him help Nottingham Forest gain promotion back to the Premier League after a 23-year absence.
Sky Sports reported last month that Spurs were in advanced talks regarding a move for the Boro ace, but the deal has been constantly held up as a result of the two clubs not being able to reach an agreement over a suitable fee.
The Latest: Spence set to join Spurs
Taking to Twitter, however, Percy revealed that Tottenham are now ‘close’ to finalising a move for Spence. He wrote:
“Tottenham are close to signing Djed Spence from Middlesbrough for £15m. Spence set to be confirmed as a Spurs player before squad flies out to South Korea on Saturday.”
The Verdict: An exciting prospect
Paratici signing Spence would suggest that the director of football is thinking about the long-term recruitment strategy at Spurs, given the fact that he is a young player with bags of potential.
The England U21 international, who was once hailed a ‘dynamic’ player by sports journalist Josh Bunting, has proven to be a real attacking threat down the flank, averaging 1.8 dribbles per league game for Forest last season, as well as recording seven goal contributions across all competitions, via WhoScored.
Spence appears to be an exciting prospect who has a bright future ahead of him, and if reports are true, there’s a strong chance we could be seeing him holding a Spurs shirt before the start of this weekend, possibly with Clement Lenglet who is also close to a north London move.
