Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has claimed Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Eric Dier is now ‘unsellable’ and may replace Harry Maguire in the England squad.
The Lowdown: Dier under Conte
Since Antonio Conte arrived at Hotspur Way in November last year, the 28-year-old has played a crucial part in the Italian’s successful start to life as manager of the north London club.
It appears Dier has earned Conte’s trust as one of the first names on his team sheet, as the boss said it would require ‘important money’ for the Lilywhites to sell the defender.
The Latest: Robinson’s comments
Robinson, who works regularly as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes Dier is now a crucial part of the current Tottenham set-up. Speaking with Football Insider, the former Spurs goalkeeper says the Sporting CP academy product has changed the transfer plans at N17:
“Dier is unsellable at the moment.
“You could not replace him when you look at the way he is playing. Spurs are playing with a back three and there is nobody better in the Premier League playing in that role right now.
“Harry Maguire is not playing at Man United. I would have Dier over Maguire in that England squad at the moment.
“Dier can play in a back three or a back four. Under Conte, Dier is playing the best football of his career.
“Spurs were looking at other centre-halves 18 months ago but he has now cemented his place in the team. You have to commend his attitude and mental strength. He has played his way back in.
“I think he is one of the best centre-halves in the league at the moment. I’m sure he will be in the next England squad.”
The Verdict: Essential to Spurs
In the Premier League so far this season, Dier has averaged 5.7 long balls, 2.2 clearances and 1.8 interceptions per game, also boasting an impressive 89.6% pass success rate (via WhoScored).
To the player’s relief, his minutes appear to be unaffected by the arrival of Clement Lenglet, who joined the club on loan for the season from Spanish giants Barcelona.
The 28-year-old has cemented his position as the starting option in the middle of the three centre-backs, with Conte clearly happy to rotate the other options in on either side.
If Dier can maintain this sort of form heading into the World Cup later this year he is surely in line to start for his country given Maguire’s fall down the Manchester United pecking order.
