Tottenham Hotspur signing Leicester City midfielder James Maddison in January would be ‘perfect’, according to talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Lowdown: Maddison wants to join

The Premier League giants were heavily linked with an interest in the 25-year-old over the summer, and reports last month claimed that he would be 'very keen' to make the move to Spurs.

Antonio Conte recently admitted that Fabio Paratici may need ‘two or three’ more transfer windows before the club can become seriously competitive, which came after the shock 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend.

The Latest: Tottenham backed to sign Maddison

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor insisted that Spurs need to sign a creative playmaker to allow the attackers to remain further forward, with Maddison the ideal man. He said:

“I really feel like they are missing a number 10. The Newcastle game was the sort of game where they needed a number 10 to get in the hole and be that player who needs to be marked.

“As much as they’ve made a great start, if they don’t get that player in, we could be talking about Spurs battling for top-four. It’s not guaranteed.

“All of their midfielders are not goalscorers, they are just tidy on the ball.

“James Maddison is the perfect player to play in the hole, 100 percent. It would keep Harry Kane further forward.

“Spurs’ formation as well, for me, I don’t like it. They could go to a 4-2-3-1 with Son on the left, Kane down the middle, Maddison in the hole, Richarlison or Kulusevski on the right with Hojbjerg and Bentancur as the two sitters.

“He doesn’t like it because he doesn’t trust his defence, that’s the problem. When you have three centre halves, one of them has the ball a lot as that extra player and teams can work that out.

“For me, Spurs need to get going and find other players who can step up and not rely on Kane and Son.”

The Verdict: Missing piece of the puzzle

The Lilywhites have now suffered back-to-back league defeats and need someone who can add a creative spark in the centre, and Maddison is just the man for the job.

The midfield ‘monster’, as hailed by journalist Josh Bunting, has already clocked up eight goal contributions in just ten league games, and currently ranks first for the most free-kicks scored across the whole of the Premier League.

The Foxes star is pushing to get back into the England squad, and a move to Spurs would allow him to do just that should he fail to get called up for the World Cup.
