BBC pundit Alan Hutton has backed Tottenham Hotspur to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen as a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

The Lowdown: Oblak or Ter Stegen?

The Frenchman is expected to depart when his contract expires in 2024, and Fabio Paratici and Antonio Conte are already believed to be on the hunt to find his successor.

Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak was originally identified as the club’s number one target, though it seems as if they have now had a change of heart.

Jeunes Footeux claim that the 30-year-old Barcelona man is now their main priority, with the Spanish giants open to letting him move to the Premier League to help ease their financial concerns.

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Asked by Football Insider whether Ter Stegen would be an ideal replacement for Lloris, former Spurs defender Hutton said:

“I think they need a long-term replacement.

“Lloris is 35 now, there is the odd mistake creeping in. I think Tottenham, moving forward, will want somebody coming in and pushing for number one.

“They will want somebody who can play with their feet. I don’t think Lloris is overly great starting the ball from the back. Someone like Ter Stegen, who has got time on his side and can play with the ball could be an option moving forward.”

The Verdict: Lloris replacement

Ter Stegen is a highly-experienced shot-stopper having made 536 appearances throughout his career, and he would be a welcome addition between the sticks at Tottenham.

The ‘world class’ colossus, as dubbed by sports journalist Josh Bunting, has kept 212 clean sheets, with six of those coming in the opening seven La Liga games this season.

With 16 trophies to his name, Ter Stegen will know what it takes to get his hands on some silverware and could bring the same level of success with him to the capital should he make the move in the near future.
