Tottenham: Spurs end interest in Memphis Depay -Premier League News

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur are not involved in any potential deal to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay this summer.

The Lowdown: Tottenham hold talks with Depay

Having fallen out of favour under Xaxi, the 28-year-old has been linked with a Camp Nou exit all window after just one year in La Liga.

It was reported last month that the Lilywhites were in talks with the Catalans and Joe Lewis was even spotted in Spain, though valuations between the two parties always posed an issue.

Following a fresh update, it seems that Spurs have removed themselves from the race for the striker’s signature.

The Latest: Spurs end interest

Taking to Twitter, Romano confirmed that Tottenham are not making any deal for Depay, with Juventus now emerging as frontrunners.

“Memphis Depay deal. Tottenham are not interested, been told there are no talks as things stand – Juventus are the favourites to sign Depay.

“Two-year deal now discussed with Memphis, Juve want him since July but first step has to be contract termination with Barça.”

The Verdict: Right decision

Depay, once labelled a ‘dangerous’ player by former Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman, is undoubtedly a talented individual, but the decision not to continue pursuing him is the right one.

Fabio Paratici has already signed Richarlison in that versatile attacking position, and the fact that he chose to go ahead with getting the Brazilian in the building over the Dutchman speaks volumes about where his priorities lie.

Are Tottenham right not to sign Depay?

Antonio Conte is said to be eyeing one more marquee signing before September 1, so the fee that would have gone towards Depay can now be moved to fund the club’s final new addition of the summer.
