Tottenham: Spurs ‘offered’ chance to sign Memphis Depay

Tottenham: Spurs ‘offered’ chance to sign Memphis Depay -Tottenham Hotspur News

Tottenham Hotspur have ‘been offered’ the chance to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Depay links

Spanish news outlet Sport recently reported that Spurs are willing to spend £14.4m on the Netherlands international, but the Catalan outfit continue to demand a £17m transfer fee.

It is claimed that Fabio Paratici is reluctant to match Barca’s asking price, given that the 28-year-old has less than a year left on his current deal, while he has also fallen way down the pecking order at Barca after the arrivals of Raphinha from Leeds and Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

The Dutchman is said to be available for a move this summer, but while Jones confirms a deal is possible, he personally believes this isn’t the kind of signing Antonio Conte needs at Spurs.

The Latest: Jones’ claim

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist said:

“He definitely would be a luxury signing, he fits that bill. I don’t really see this as a good fit, I think it’s a bit too risky. He’s been offered to them; I know that much. But I don’t think they need him to be honest.”

The Verdict: Not needed?

When analysing Depay’s underlying stats, it is easy to see why Paratici could be interested in signing the playmaker extraordinaire.

Compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the 28-year-old ranks in the 99th percentile for passes, in the 97th percentile for progressive carries and progressive passes received, and in the 94th percentile for shot-creating actions (via FBRef).

Indeed, you won’t find many forwards with better creative numbers, and that skill-set isn’t a new thing either, with BBC writer Statman Dave hailing the Dutchman’s ‘phenomenal‘ creative numbers back during his time at Lyon.

Spurs fans, do you remember who scored your first goal of the season against Man City?

However, with the North London outfit having already signed Richarlison for £60m this summer, a move for another attacker seems unlikely, given the competition for minutes on the pitch.

Therefore, it can be argued that Depay’s talent would be wasted with a move to Hotspur Way.
