Tottenham Hotspur are now set to move for AS Monaco defender Vanderson in the January transfer window, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Tottenham targeting right-wing back

There have been recent reports indicating that Emerson Royal is now free to leave Tottenham this month, with Antonio Conte keen to bring in a new option at right-wing back.

Sporting CP Pedro Porro has been considered by Spurs, and it emerged at the beginning of the month that a deal to sign him was close, but they later cooled their interest, due to an unwillingness to pay the asking price of £40m.

The Latest: Vanderson targeted

According to a report from CalcioMercato, Tottenham are now set to move for Vanderson, but Daniel Levy will need to meet the asking price of over £17m if he is going to tempt Monaco into a sale.

There will be competition for the 21-year-old's signature, with Inter Milan also named as potential suitors, after being impressed by his performances in recent months.

The Verdict: Better than Porro?

The youngster is likely to be available for a lower price than Porro, but he is also a different type of player, specialising more in his defensive duties, while the Spaniard poses a greater threat going forward.

With an average of 1.75 interceptions and 1.64 blocks per 90 over the past year, the Brazilian is in the 95th percentile in both areas, also ranking in the 99th for progressive passes received, averaging 4.82, displaying his aptitude at being able to get on the ball in promising areas.

On the other hand, Porro has averaged 0.41 assists per 90 over the past year, compared to just 0.07 from Vanderson, so who Conte chooses to sign will ultimately come down to whether defensive or attacking capability is more important to the Italian in a wing-back.

Lauded as a 'complete' full-back by scout Jacek Kulig, who also highlights his pace as one of his key strengths, the AS Monaco man is clearly a very talented player, and could be a smart bit of business as a cheaper alternative to current targets.
