Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips has tipped Tottenham’s record acquisition Tanguy Ndombele to be a ‘fantastic signing’ following his performances this campaign, claiming that Jose Mourinho ‘clearly likes him’.
Ndombele, who was at the centre of a fallout with Mourinho earlier in the summer, with reports via Get French Football News claiming the player was even ready to leave, has seemingly turned a corner so far this season.
Ndombele shines for Spurs
Signed for a club record £53.8m in the summer of 2019 (BBC), Ndombele was a big miss for the Lilywhites against Royal Antwerp, but luckily for Spurs he looks set to return against Brighton.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips has waxed lyrical over Ndombele’s second coming this season, claiming that he could be a fantastic signing for the club after all. He said:
“I said along that I thought he would come good. I just think that he needed a bit of time to settle in because it can be difficult.
“I heard him saying that the criticism that he received from Mourinho did not hurt him as much as other people thought. He took it in his stride and all that you can do then is get out on the pitch and show it.
“Mourinho is clearly a fan of his if he has started him in the last three Premier League games.
“I think he will get better and better and end up being a fantastic signing for Spurs. Real positive signs.”
Transfer Tavern take
Given the 23-year-old’s presence under Mourinho, Phillips may be right in his verdict, but only time will tell whether Ndombele eventually fully justifies Levy’s significant investment and £200,000-a-week wages.
