Tottenham: Journalist provides Cody Gakpo update -Premier League News

Tottenham are one of three Premier League clubs who could sign PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo, according to Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Lowdown: Gakpo on fire

The 23-year-old has emerged as arguably the best player in the Eredivisie currently, ripping defences apart with his pace, directness and most notably his end product.

Incredibly, Gakpo has already scored nine goals and registered seven assists in just ten league starts in 2022/23, highlighting what a talent he is. Across all competitions, he’s managed 24 direct goal contributions, averaging out to a goal or assist every 60 minutes.

Spurs are one of a host of teams who have reportedly shown an interest in the Dutch winger and an exciting update has now emerged.

The Latest: Spurs in the mix

Speaking to Wettfreunde [via Sport Witness], Di Marzio claimed that Spurs, Manchester United and Arsenal are in a three-way battle to acquire Gakpo’s signature:

“I know him very well. He’s a very, very good player. When you play in the Eredivisie with PSV and Ajax, you obviously learn intensity and quality, so the Premier League is the right move for players like him. I think Manchester United, Arsenal or Tottenham.

“Tottenham, I think, need other players like him to have a deeper squad and more managerial choices. One of those teams. It depends on what PSV want for him. I think Manchester United or Arsenal, or Tottenham, for that matter, are the right projects for a quality and intense player like him.

“Of course, it’s still too early to say if there is a deal or if the clubs are talking to each other. We are in October, and there is also a World Cup, so all transfers will be postponed. Each club will wait until the World Cup and see what happens.”

The Verdict: What a signing he would be

It clearly isn’t going to be easy for Spurs to get their man but this is still exciting news, with Gakpo someone who really does look like a special prospect.

The PSV talisman’s end product is absolutely relentless, albeit in a slightly weaker league, and his recent form has been described as ‘incredible’ by BBC Sport writer Statman Dave.

Whether or not Spurs manage to entice Gakpo to the club remains to be seen but the fact that they are even in the conversation says a lot about the progress made under Antonio Conte.
