The Lowdown: Lo Celso out on loan
The Argentine is currently out on loan at La Liga side Villarreal, starting seven league games this season and appearing to be happier than at Spurs, where he had a mere 14 Premier League starts since the beginning of 2020/21.
Lo Celso was deemed surplus to requirements by Antonio Conte during the summer and it now looks increasingly unlikely that he will play for the club again.
It could even be the case that the 26-year-old is move on before the end of the season, following one recent report.
The Latest: January exit mooted
According to Football Insider, Lo Celso will be allowed to leave Spurs permanently in January, with the club willing to entertain offers of £18m for him, despite signing him for just over 50% more than that.
The north Londoners are ‘keen’ to remove the Argentina international from their payroll once and for all and will even be happy to let him leave for a substantial loss.
The Verdict: Good time to sell
This is a potential outcome which feels beneficial for everyone concerned, should a club come in for Lo Celso and offer him a way out of Tottenham for good.
It would allow the midfielder a permanent move, making him more settled, while Spurs would be getting a £70k-per-week earner off their wage bill who isn’t considered part of their future plans.
Lo Celso is no slouch – Harry Winks has called him ‘fantastic’ in the past and he has won 41 caps for Argentina – but some moves simply don’t work out in the long run, and it would be a surprise if he is still at Spurs next summer.
