Tottenham Hotspur have been given the go-ahead by Daniel Levy to make a number of new signings during the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Conte in need of signings

Spurs have had a hit-and-miss start to the season, admittedly sitting third in the Premier League but not always producing consistent all-round performances, while their Champions League fate hangs in the balance going into the final matchday this week.

Conte's squad is arguably a little threadbare in certain areas of the pitch, with the midfield often lacking control, so the need for more signings seems evident.

The manager has made it perfectly clear that he wants to see new faces coming into N17, although in Levy, he is dealing with someone who is notorious for his frugal approach.

The Latest: Levy green-lights multiple January signings

However, according to Football Insider, Spurs' managing director Fabio Paratici has been 'given the green light' by Levy to make 'multiple' signings when the January window arrives.

Conte believes that his squad needs 'considerable improvement' in terms of being able to compete with those in a stronger financial position battling for major trophies, making 'public and private pleas' to be given backing in the transfer market to this effect.

The Verdict: Injection of quality needed

While Spurs' current squad is stronger than many to have graced the Premier League, it perhaps still needs a fresh injection of quality if they are to go up another level and genuinely contend for the title.

A creative midfielder such as rumoured target James Maddison is someone who could be an ideal January signing, potentially adding a different dimension to the team, while defensive reinforcements also wouldn't go amiss given the strong criticism of players like Davinson Sanchez and Emerson Royal.

Despite their naturally defence-minded style, Conte's team have still conceded 16 goals in 13 league games this season, so bringing in a world-class centre-back could shore things up, along with signing a new goalkeeper to be Hugo Lloris' long-term replacement.
