Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing Benfica defender Ruben Dias in the summer transfer window.
In his column for Football.London, Alasdair Gold reported that Mourinho is looking to return to Benfica for a transfer approach and he wants to sign Dias from the Portuguese giants.
The report states that Dias had signed a new deal with Benfica last November and this saw his release clause increase to £80million. But it is stated that this shouldn’t deter Spurs as Mourinho’s history with Dias’ agent Jorge Mendes could help the Lilywhites sign the central defender. Gold’s report rates Dias at around the £40million mark.
Here’s exactly what was said:
“It is believed that the Spurs boss is keen on returning to old club Benfica to take another player, after Gedson Fernandes’ January loan.
That move would be for Portugal international Ruben Dias, who will be 23 by the time football returns.
The highly-rated centre-back signed a new deal in November, which reportedly increased his buy-out clause to £80million.
Dias’ agent though is Jorge Mendes, who has a long history with Mourinho, and Tottenham would hope to agree a lower fee for a player who is rated at around the £40million mark.”
Will Spurs sign Ruben Dias this summer?
This season, Dias has been a regular at the back in Liga NOS for Benfica. He has made 24 appearances at the back, while scoring two goals and picking up one assist. He has racked up an impressive Whoscored rating of 7.06 for his league performances.
Last season, Dias had racked up a rating of 6.96 in the league and it shows that he is a consistent performer. He had made 32 appearances in Liga NOS last season, scoring three goals and winning 3.2 aerial duels per game too.
With Jan Vertonghen’s contract at the club running out at the end of the season, one can see why Spurs would want a central defender. Toby Alderweireld meanwhile, has racked up a Whoscored rating of 6.79 in the Premier League and it shows that he hasn’t had the best of seasons.
Dias is 22 and presents a younger option than Alderweireld and Vertonghen. If Spurs can get him for less than his release clause, it will be a very good deal for them.
