TalkSPORT pundit Troy Deeney has slammed the use of Eric Dier at centre-back by Jose Mourinho, saying that he is far better as a holding midfielder.
Deeney discusses Dier role
So far this campaign, Mourinho has played the England international at centre-back. He was also selected in the same position by Gareth Southgate for the Three Lions against Belgium, and his 6.4 SofaScore rating suggests he was far from convincing.
Deeney believes that he should play in midfield rather than at the back. He said:
“I’m still not convinced with Eric Dier as a centre-half. I think he’s better as a midfielder…he might obviously disagree with me. He doesn’t strike me as he’s comfortable in the centre of a three.
“He’s a great player, I’m not trying to dig him out. I’d just like to see him more as a holding midfielder.”
Dier has played a lot of games in both positions. According to Transfermarkt, he has played 138 times in a holding midfield role, and 109 times as a central defender. You can understand the point Deeney is trying to make – Spurs have only kept two clean sheets in the 10 games he has played at the back this term.
Where should Eric Dier play?
It is a problem for the £19.8m-valued former Sporting Lisbon man (Transfermartk) that, at the age of 26, it is still not clear what his best position is. This is something that you would hope is settled on sooner rather than later – otherwise, he might lose his spot at both club and international level.
In other news, this Spurs man is tipped to move on in January.
