# Tottenham Hotspur: Noel Whelan believes Spurs should sign Philippe Coutinho at a bargain price

**Noel Whelan believes Tottenham target Philippe Coutinho will be a ‘world-beater’ if he moves to North London in the summer.**

Speaking exclusively to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/all-day-long-great-deal-exclusive-spurs-urged-to-sign-world-beater-after-big-development/), the former Leeds United forward insisted the Brazil international could be an absolute bargain.

Coutinho has spent the past season on loan at the Allianz Arena but Bayern Munich chairman [Karl-Heinz Rummenigge](https://twitter.com/cfbayern/status/1264147884762693632) recently confirmed the Bundesliga club do not intend to sign him permanently.

Earlier this month, [the outlet](https://www.footballinsider247.com/door-opens-for-tottenham-to-sign-superstar-after-huge-development-today/) revealed his parent club FC Barcelona are looking to get rid of the the 27-year-old before the start of next season.

Although Barca are willing to accept offers at a [significantly reduced price](https://www.footballinsider247.com/i-can-see-coutinho-deal-being-done-exclusive-robinson-in-stunning-spurs-claim-after-update/), reports claim [Spurs are only interested](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-tottenham-tell-barcelona-what-theyll-pay-for-coutinho/) in signing the midfielder on a loan deal.

Whelan told football correspondent [Dylan Childs](https://www.footballinsider247.com/all-day-long-great-deal-exclusive-spurs-urged-to-sign-world-beater-after-big-development/) “there is a great deal to be had there on a fantastic player. No one has got the best out of him since he left Liverpool but there is a player there, a good creative player.

“If you can get that same ability that he had at Liverpool, you have a world-beater on your hands and you can get him for a very, very good price.

“It has got to be the right club. Tottenham, Arsenal or Chelsea would suit him down to the ground.

“People will take a chance on him because he has got an untold amount of ability. He looks very professional and I would want him in my team all day long because players like him are hard to come by.”

While it is fair to say Coutinho has failed to hit the [same heights](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-philippe-coutinho-transfer-race-arsenal-chelsea-paul-robinson-a4450231.html) he enjoyed with Liverpool, it is hard to argue with the pundit on this one.

[\[freshpress-poll id=”299839″\]](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/[freshpress-poll%20id=%22299839%22])

Ever since he arrived at the Nou Camp from Anfield for [£142m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jan/06/philippe-coutinho-join-barcelona-142m-deal-liverpool) in 2018, the [£50.4m-valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/80444) ace has played [76 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/80444) for the Blaugrana, scoring 21 goals and creating 11 assists in all competitions.

Furthermore, he has lifted the La Liga trophy twice with Barcelona, although he was usurped by [Antoine Griezmann](https://www.goal.com/en/news/tottenham-could-still-sign-coutinho-says-ex-goalkeeper/1ent3vqkp8z1i12nnlw73hh5y9) when Quique Setien took charge.

However, the playmaker has given fans a glimpse of his genuine quality during his time with the Bavarians, providing 8 goals and 6 assists in the Bundesliga this season, taking 2.6 shots per game, making 1.4 key passes, and successfully completing 1.5 dribbles on average. He has also been awarded a high statistical rating of 7.29 via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/80767/Show/Philippe-Coutinho) so far.

Although he has largely struggled to rediscover the form that saw him win [Liverpool’s Player of the Year](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2015/05/19/11902542/coutinho-named-liverpools-player-of-the-year-players-player) in 2015, the 27-year-old would certainly be a huge upgrade on the midfield options available to Jose Mourinho at the moment.

It is worth pointing out the club’s record signing Tanguy Ndombele has earned a receiving a low overall rating of 6.9 per [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/321389/Show/Tanguy-Ndombele). Moreover, [Giovani Lo Celso](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/303908/Show/Giovani-Lo-Celso) and [Moussa Sissoko](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/29595/Show/Moussa-Sissoko) are rated at 6.65 and 6.68 respectively according to WhoScored.

All things considered, Coutinho’s experience at the top levels of the game could prove to be a decisive factor as Spurs look to challenge for silverware next season. He might even act as a mentor to some of the Lilywhites’ youngsters, which is surely an added bonus.
