# Tottenham Hotspur: Paul Robinson rages at Spurs footage as news emerges

**Tottenham thought they had grabbed an immediate equaliser to Sander Berge’s opening strike, only to see the goal ruled out VAR in the 3-1 defeat at [Sheffield United](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53273121).**

Blades boss [Chris Wilder](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53273121) said the technology was a total farce after Harry Kane’s effort was disallowed because Lucas Moura’s arm appeared to touch the ball in the build-up.

Paul Robinson has raged at VAR official Michael Oliver for the “ridiculous” decision to rule out Kane’s goal as Spurs slumped to a disappointing defeat to Sheffield United.

Speaking exclusively to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/absurd-crazy-terrible-exclusive-paul-robinson-fumes-at-tottenham-footage/), the former Spurs star insisted [the footage](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8485491/MARK-CLATTENBURG-Lucas-Moura-incident-shows-handball-law-needs-revising.html) showed it was “the most absurd decision from VAR.”

[Moura](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8485491/MARK-CLATTENBURG-Lucas-Moura-incident-shows-handball-law-needs-revising.html) was nudged in the back by Berge and fell to the ground, only for [John Egan](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8485491/MARK-CLATTENBURG-Lucas-Moura-incident-shows-handball-law-needs-revising.html) to boot the ball into the Brazilian, and Kane seized the opportunity to put the ball into the back of the net.

[VAR](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8485491/MARK-CLATTENBURG-Lucas-Moura-incident-shows-handball-law-needs-revising.html) spotted the ball bounced off of Moura’s arm, even though it wasn’t his fault, and [Mark Clattenburg](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8485491/MARK-CLATTENBURG-Lucas-Moura-incident-shows-handball-law-needs-revising.html) believes the handball law needs changing.

Robinson told football writer [Dylan Childs](https://www.footballinsider247.com/absurd-crazy-terrible-exclusive-paul-robinson-fumes-at-tottenham-footage/) “I think it is absolutely ridiculous. It’s the most absurd decision from VAR. I have seen some crazy decision from VAR, and we did not think it could get any stranger, but that is the most absurd decision I have ever seen.

“Referees have a hard job but they are not helping themselves with decisions like that. It is a terrible decision. It was not even handball. The most absurd decision of the season.

“When a ball is flying at you from that kind of range, how can that be given? It beggars belief.”

It is hard to argue with Robinson here, as [the Brazilian](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/fixtures-results/tottenham-goal-var-sheffield-united-18533765) appeared to be fouled before the incident occurred. Moreover, Moura was trying to stop his fall, and couldn’t have put his arms anywhere else.

However, under [IFAB regulations](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53273121), a goal cannot be awarded if the ball touches an arm that leads to a goal or a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Nevertheless, some still will question whether or not the result would have stayed the same even if Kane’s strike stood.

[Spurs](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-daniel-levy-contacts-ndombele-agent-mourinho-rift/) struggled to break down the Blades defence and Jose Mourinho has [bigger issues](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-daniel-levy-contacts-ndombele-agent-mourinho-rift/) he urgently needs to solve if the Lilywhites are going to close the gap on [Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) champions Liverpool next season.

[VAR](https://www.90min.com/posts/6495636-ranking-the-10-most-controversial-var-calls-in-the-premier-league-so-far-this-season) has fuelled plenty of debate ever since its introduction at the start of the season, as [Sheffield United](https://www.90min.com/posts/6495636-ranking-the-10-most-controversial-var-calls-in-the-premier-league-so-far-this-season) were on the receiving end of a dubious decision themselves after Son Heung-min scored the opener at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

While this latest incident happened last week, [fans and pundits](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/fixtures-results/tottenham-goal-var-sheffield-united-18533765) still haven’t forgiven the officials for their obvious mistake. Thankfully for Spurs, they managed to bounce back with a 1-0 victory against Everton on Monday to get themselves back on track.
