# Tottenham Hotspur: Spanish source shares promising Philippe Coutinho update

**As per an update by Spanish news outlet [Mundo Deportivo](https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futbol/fc-barcelona/20220104/1001732781/coutinho-salir-pronto-barca.html), there has been a promising update as Tottenham Hotspur’s links to Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho continue.**

### The Lowdown: Spurs eye attacker move?

Since the departure of former club favourite and long-serving midfield creator Christian Eriksen, there is certainly a case to be made that Tottenham have [severely missed his presence.](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-spurs-christian-eriksen-graham-roberts-ajax-inter/)

The likes of [Giovani Lo Celso](https://www.footballinsider247.com/tottenham-insider-claims-utter-passenger-lo-celso-has-everything-to-prove/) and [Dele Alli](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/pundit-slams-lost-dele-alli-tottenham-nuno-brutal-tactical-verdict) have failed to replicate the Dane’s influence further forward leading to Tottenham reportedly scouring the market for fresh faces.

Juventus ace Dejan Kulusevski, who can operate as an [advanced playmaker](https://twitter.com/FTalentScout/status/1289578658185850881?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw), is on Fabio Paratici’s[transfer list](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Calciomercato/Juventus/29-12-2021/juventus-kulusevski-mercato-tottenham-430671789639.shtml?cmpid=shortener_ca4f693fsk) whilst the Lilywhites have also been linked with Man United outcast [Jesse Lingard](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/manchester-united-engman_utd/story/4523950/man-uniteds-jesse-lingard-set-to-leave-on-free-after-contract-talks-break-down-sources) and [Coutinho.](https://www.elnacional.cat/ca/esports/conte-tottenham-joan-laporta-coutinho_688766_102.html)

In an update on the latter target, Mundo Deportivo have now dropped a fairly encouraging claim.

### The Latest: Coutinho ‘would choose’ Tottenham…

As per [their information](https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futbol/fc-barcelona/20220104/1001732781/coutinho-salir-pronto-barca.html), it cannot be ruled out that Barca may sell Coutinho ‘in the coming days’ as they work to find him a new club.

Indeed, the Brazil international is apparently ‘already’ eyeing an exit and is ‘receiving offers’ – but is it believed the 29-year-old ‘would choose’ Tottenham over fellow suitors Newcastle United.

### The Verdict: Get it done Paratici?

There is little denying that the midfielder comes with plenty of pedigree having already dazzled for ex-club Liverpool in England.

Coutinho managed a brilliant 54 goals and 45 assists in all competitions for the Reds over his[201 appearances,](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/80444) highlighting the fact he is a proven Premier League player, while compatriot Roberto Firmino has even called him ‘magical’ and ‘phenomenal’ ([Goal](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/coutinho-has-magical-powers-firmino-heaps-praise-upon-phenomenal-/g0yh5e5v41dm1hty0vp6wj909)).

Barca would apparently accept [€20 million (£16.6m)](https://www.elnacional.cat/ca/esports/conte-tottenham-joan-laporta-coutinho_688766_102.html) for the player this month too, but the only red herring for Spurs is arguably Coutinho’s sky-high [£380,000-per-week wages.](https://salarysport.com/football/player/coutinho/)

This is almost double the salary of Tottenham’s highest earners[Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/tottenham-hotspur-fc/payroll/) with the South American almost certainly having to accept a big wage reduction if he wishes to seal a north London move.
