# Tottenham Hotspur: Pochettino favourite set to complete season before leaving Spurs on free transfer

**According to [The Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-jan-vertonghen-to-leave-free-after-season-a4459431.html), Jan Vertonghen is set to finish the season with Tottenham before leaving the club as a free agent.**

Vertonghen’s contract runs out in June but Spurs have offered him an extension to cover the remaining nine matches.

Last month the [Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/news/1667675) announced clubs can negotiate short-term extensions for players whose deals are due to expire on 30 June.

Football correspondent [Dan Kilpatrick](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-jan-vertonghen-to-leave-free-after-season-a4459431.html) revealed the Belgian intends to remain loyal to the Lilywhites as he will be unable to play for another club until next season at the earliest.

Moreover, the veteran is well aware that it is unlikely he will play every game, which has put his injury fears at ease.

However, [Jose Mourinho has ended discussions](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-fans-back-mourinho-decision-vertonghen-contract-talks/) with Vertonghen’s representatives, and the board have ruled out offering him a long-term deal.

Although the defender was a [favourite](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mauricio-pochettino/eingesetzteSpieler/trainer/9044) of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, he has [fallen out of favour](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1284536/Tottenham-news-Jan-Vertonghen-transfer-Jose-Mourinho-contract) with the Argentine’s successor, and it appears his eight-year-spell in north London is finally coming to an end.

The 33-year-old is reportedly considering his options, as he has received an offer from [Real Betis](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-hotspur-fans-react-to-jan-vertonghens-link-to-real-betis/), and Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte is keen to bring him to the [San Siro Stadium](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1289271/Tottenham-news-Jan-Vertonghen-transfer-exit-contract-talks-Jose-Mourinho-Premier-League).

Vertonghen has [previously said](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-jan-vertonghen-to-leave-free-after-season-a4459431.html) he would like to end his career at his [boyhood club Ajax](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jan-vertonghen/profil/spieler/43250), but he is now weighing up a move to Italy.

While he is below the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga in the [pecking order](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/players/tottenham-already-next-no-5-18349314), his presence in the dressing room may be a decisive factor as Spurs look to seal a spot in the top four, as he could provide advice to some of his younger teammates.
