# Tottenham Hotspur: Pundit drools over Barcelona star linked with Spurs move

**Alex Bruce believes Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho would be a ‘great signing’ for Tottenham Hotspur if they manage to pull off a move in the summer.**

Speaking exclusively to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-spurs-make-decision-over-signing-17-goal-assist-superstar-bruce-drools/), the former Hull City defender suggested Spurs may reap the rewards if Coutinho can replicate his heroics at Anfield.

Earlier this week, [the outlet](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-tottenham-tell-barcelona-what-theyll-pay-for-coutinho/) reported the Lilywhites have told Barca they are keen to sign the Brazilian on loan with the option to buy.

Sources revealed the club are looking to cover only part of his [hefty weekly wages](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-spurs-make-decision-over-signing-17-goal-assist-superstar-bruce-drools/) as it is likely a loan deal would cost Daniel Levy several millions.

He has spent the past season on loan at Bayern Munich but [Karl-Heinz Rummenigge](https://twitter.com/cfbayern/status/1264147884762693632) recently announced the Bundesliga club do not intend to sign him permanently.

Nevertheless, the [Premier League veteran](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-spurs-make-decision-over-signing-17-goal-assist-superstar-bruce-drools/) feels he would be a welcome addition to Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Bruce told assistant editor [Russell Edge](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-spurs-make-decision-over-signing-17-goal-assist-superstar-bruce-drools/): “well it would be a great signing, wouldn’t it? He’s been in the Premier League before and had a huge impact with Liverpool and obviously, if he comes back to the Premier League, Spurs will be hoping he has a similar impact.

“With the loans, they’ll do a deal on the wages but clubs will need to get players off wage bills and things like that so I think the loan market will be very active.”

While Coutinho has largely failed to find the form that saw him win [Liverpool’s Player of the Year](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2015/05/19/11902542/coutinho-named-liverpools-player-of-the-year-players-player) in 2015, it is difficult to disagree with the pundit on this one.

Ever since he arrived at the Nou Camp from Merseyside for [£142m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jan/06/philippe-coutinho-join-barcelona-142m-deal-liverpool) in 2018, the 27-year-old has made [76 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/80444) for Barcelona, scoring 21 goals and creating 11 assists in all competitions.

He has won La Liga twice with the Spaniards, although he lost his place in the starting lineup to [Antoine Griezmann](https://www.goal.com/en/news/tottenham-could-still-sign-coutinho-says-ex-goalkeeper/1ent3vqkp8z1i12nnlw73hh5y9) once Quique Setien took charge of the club.

However, it is fair to say the Brazil international was undeterred by this setback, as he has shown flashes of his overall brilliance at the Allianz Arena, scoring 8 goals and 6 assists in the Bundesliga this season, taking 2.6 shots per game, making 1.4 key passes, and completing 1.5 dribbles on average. He has been awarded a solid statistical rating of 7.29 via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/80767/Show/Philippe-Coutinho) in recognition of his performances.

The club’s record signing [Tanguy Ndombele](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-keeping-tanguy-ndombele-barcelona-liverpool-transfer-links-a4437631.html) has arguably struggled for consistency this season, earning a below-par rating of 6.9 via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/321389/Show/Tanguy-Ndombele), and his teammate Giovani Lo Celso is currently rated at 6.65 according to [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/303908/Show/Giovani-Lo-Celso).

Evidently, Coutinho could give Mourinho the experience he desperately needs to challenge for trophies next season, and he may even act as a mentor to some of Spurs’ younger players on-and-off the pitch.
