# Tottenham Hotspur: Shock move for Christian Benteke emerges

**Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a late transfer move for Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke, according to [Football Insider.](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-mourinho-sets-sights-on-shock-late-tottenham-move-to-sign-palace-big-name/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1601282753)**

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is seemingly keen to find a new striker option to add competition for Harry Kane during the current transfer window.

The Portuguese tactician saw his side concede a 97th minute penalty to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon to be held to a 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

The report goes on to add that Spurs have seen moves for Alexander Sorloth – who joined RB Leipzig – and [Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik collapse this window](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-tottenham-bid-to-sign-serie-a-star-collapses-after-london-talks/).

Benteke, 29, who currently is on the books with Palace, only [found the back of the net twice for Palace last season in 24 appearances.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-benteke/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/50201)

The Belgian international is valued at [£9.45m by website Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-benteke/profil/spieler/50201) but it is thought a deal for Spurs would be slightly less.

This is a strange transfer rumour but one that could make sense. Mourinho wants to find a back-up striker and Benteke could certainly be just that.

Given his recent record it is likely that he would accept playing second fiddle to Kane and he could be a Fernando Llorente-esque signing for Tottenham. Indeed the Spaniard was the back-up option at Spurs for a couple of years and had a great physical presence, standing at [193cm tall and listing aerial duels as a main strength](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/13361/Show/Fernando-Llorente).

Benteke, who was once described as “[exceptional](https://www.eurosport.com/football/lambert-heaps-praise-on-benteke_sto3662953/story.shtml)” by former boss Paul Lambert, is just shorter at [190cm (6’2″) but is also extremely strong in the air](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/68312/Show/Christian-Benteke) and could give the north London outfit a different option from the bench. With a market value of less than £10m too, this could be an affordable option for Daniel Levy.
