# Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs confirm club legend Ledley King has become Jose Mourinho’s first-team assistant

**Tottenham Hotspur have officially confirmed the appointment of club legend [Ledley King](https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2020/august/ledley-joins-first-team-staff/) as Jose Mourinho’s first-team assistant.**

Last month, [Tottenham fans](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-hotspur-eric-dier-signs-new-four-year-deal/) got what they wanted, after Eric Dier signed a new four-year deal with the club.

Now it seems they are in for another treat, as King has replaced tactical analyst [Ricardo Formosinho](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-ledley-king-jose-mourinho-appointed-first-team-assistant-a4518301.html) on the backroom staff, who has left [north London](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/tottenham/tottenham-hotspur-ex-spur-claims-ledley-king-is-a-wonderful-role-model-as-he-joins-jose-mourinhos-staff/) to pursue his own career.

The 39-year-old former Spurs captain became a club ambassador after retiring in 2012 and will return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as part of the [first team staff](https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2020/august/ledley-joins-first-team-staff/), working with the coaches, analysts and players at Hotspur Way and on matchdays as well.

King will forever be remembered as a one-club man, having made more than 300 appearances for [Spurs](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/tottenham/tottenham-hotspur-ex-spur-insists-hiring-ledley-king-is-a-jose-mourinho-masterstroke/), scoring fourteen goals in all competitions, and he famously lifted the League Cup when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final at Wembley, which remains the club’s [last trophy](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/when-was-the-last-time-tottenham-won-a-trophy/1xpmj8i7ctn7h1aitrxrxn04gq#:~:text=last%20tasted%20silverware%3F-,When%20was%20the%20last%20time%20Tottenham%20won%20a%20trophy%3F,were%20crowned%20League%20Cup%20winners.) to this day.

[\[freshpress-poll id=”312968″\]](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/[freshpress-poll%20id=%22312968%22])

His career for club and country was sadly [curtailed](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/tottenham/tottenham-hotspur-ex-spur-claims-ledley-king-is-a-wonderful-role-model-as-he-joins-jose-mourinhos-staff/) but he stayed with his boyhood club by working behind-the-scenes.

The legendary defender [reportedly](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/tottenham/tottenham-hotspur-ex-spur-claims-ledley-king-is-a-wonderful-role-model-as-he-joins-jose-mourinhos-staff/) impressed Mourinho while working with the defence during the suspension of football and it is [understood](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-ledley-king-jose-mourinho-appointed-first-team-assistant-a4518301.html) that he is a calm presence and well-respected figure in the dressing room.

It is common knowledge that the Lilywhites leaked goals for fun [last term](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/goals_conceded), but they saved four clean sheets since the [Premier League](https://www.transfermarkt.com/tottenham-hotspur/spielplandatum/verein/148) restarted, so it seems as though his influence at [Enfield Training Centre](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/ledley-king-joining-tottenham-coaching-staff-jose-mourinho-a4508016.html) is already being felt.

He will support academy players as they [make the jump](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53681227) to senior level and he will be hoping he can share his experiences from [13 years of service](https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2020/august/ledley-joins-first-team-staff/) as a player as Mourinho’s side seek silverware next season.

King knows the club like the back of his hand which could prove useful for the Portuguese who has had a [tough start](https://www.goal.com/en/news/mourinho-tottenhams-recent-progress-will-put-us-a-step-ahead-for-/193sa4cyyrta91ti08pe31tl91) to life in north London.
