# Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs ‘firmly’ in race to sign Philippe Coutinho amid interest from Premier League rivals

**Philippe Coutinho is ‘considering’ a return to the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur firmly in the race to sign the Barcelona star in the summer, reports say.**

Coutinho has been [cast aside](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12235818/coutinho-considering-arsenal-leicester-tottenham/) by Quique Setien, as he lost his place to [Antoine Griezmann](https://www.goal.com/en/news/tottenham-could-still-sign-coutinho-says-ex-goalkeeper/1ent3vqkp8z1i12nnlw73hh5y9), and he has spent the past season on loan at Bayern Munich.

According to [Sport](https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/futuro-coutinho-caliente-mercado-premier-barca-8055178), as cited by [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12235818/coutinho-considering-arsenal-leicester-tottenham/), his agent Kia Joorabchian has been holding talks with Premier League clubs ‘for weeks’ as he plots his return to England.

[The report](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12235818/coutinho-considering-arsenal-leicester-tottenham/) claims Coutinho has rejected an offer from Arsenal, as Mikel Arteta’s side will not be able to afford his wages.

On the other hand, Spurs have been given a major boost in the transfer market, as the fact that they have qualified for [the Europa League](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12235818/coutinho-considering-arsenal-leicester-tottenham/) has enabled them to make a move for the former Liverpool forward in the summer.

[\[freshpress-poll id=”311489″\]](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/[freshpress-poll%20id=%22311489%22])

However, they will face stiff competition from [Leicester City](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12235818/coutinho-considering-arsenal-leicester-tottenham/), who find themselves in the same boat.

While Coutinho has failed to find [the form](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-philippe-coutinho-transfer-race-arsenal-chelsea-paul-robinson-a4450231.html) he enjoyed at Anfield, he could add that extra layer of quality to Jose Mourinho’s side.

Despite his struggles, the Brazilian has actually earned a higher [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/80767/Show/Philippe-Coutinho) rating than the club’s record signing [Tanguy Ndombele](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/321389/Show/Tanguy-Ndombele), [Giovani Lo Celso](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/303908/Show/Giovani-Lo-Celso) and [Moussa Sissoko](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/29595/Show/Moussa-Sissoko) this season.

The Lilywhites looked devoid of options at times throughout the season, as they struggled to score goals during [Harry Kane’s](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-kane/leistungsdaten/spieler/132098) lengthy absence.

Failing to replace Christian Eriksen after he left for Inter Milan has been a real problem, although the Portuguese has paired Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks [together](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-hotspur-ex-spur-insists-fans-dont-understand-harry-winks/) to great effect. Nevertheless, Mourinho still wants to sign a new [playmaker](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/transfer-gossip-tottenham-frontrunners-nicolo-zaniolo) to add to his attacking options this summer.

[Recent reports](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/06/12/barcelona-prepared-pay-portion-philippe-coutinhos-wages-leave/) revealed Barca are prepared to pay a portion of his salary for him to leave the club this year. However, Spurs chairman [Daniel Levy](https://www.90min.com/posts/6595503-7-times-daniel-levy-tried-to-avoid-spending-money) may baulk at his hefty wages, which are reportedly worth more than [£200,000](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/06/12/barcelona-prepared-pay-portion-philippe-coutinhos-wages-leave/)-a-week, and Mourinho may have to turn his attentions elsewhere.
