# Tottenham Hotspur: First summer signing is imminent

**Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster is set to undergo a medical at [Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/) this week, claims Daily Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath.**

### **The Lowdown: Forster’s Saints contract**

Both Alex McCarthy and Forster headed into last summer with just [12 months left on their contracts at St Mary’s.](https://theathletic.com/3311087/2022/05/15/southampton-to-let-fraser-forster-go-this-summer-and-target-young-replacement/?source=emp_shared_article)

The former agreed fresh terms with the club, [agreeing to a new three-year deal](https://theathletic.com/2788898/2021/08/25/exclusive-alex-mccarthy-signs-new-three-year-deal-at-southampton-paving-the-way-for-forster-departure/), but the latter was not offered a new contract and will now be allowed to sign somewhere else for zero transfer cost.

[The Athletic’s Dan Sheldon](https://twitter.com/dansheldonsport/status/1525737781439479811) previously reported that Southampton will sit the keeper down and inform him that he is free to leave. The 34-year-old is set to be out of contract officially at the end of June after [spending seven seasons at the south-coast club.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fraser-forster/profil/spieler/52570)

### **The Verdict: Great signing for Conte**

With Lilywhites boss Antonio Conte set on signing a new back-up goalkeeper to [replace Pierluigi Gollini](https://www.yardbarker.com/soccer/articles/antonio_conte_tells_tottenham_man_he_doesnt_want_him_next_season/s1_15953_37521230), the 34-year-old’s arrival will provide excellent experience as a no.2 and also serve to help solve the homegrown player issue at N17.

With [168 appearances tallied in the Scottish Premiership](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fraser-forster/leistungsdaten/spieler/52570) and a further 133 games under his [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) belt, Forster, dubbed ‘ridiculous’ for ‘one of the best goalkeeping performances’ this season vs Arsenal by [journalist Josh Bunting](https://twitter.com/Buntingfootball/status/1515402762355412997), will be able to come in and be relied upon to do a solid job with his wealth of experience.

On a free transfer, we feel this will be a great and shrewd signing for Tottenham.
