# Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs lead Man United in race to sign Thomas Meunier

**Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain star Thomas Meunier’s agent ahead of a potential move this summer.**

According to the [Daily Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip), Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has been monitoring Meunier for several months and has identified the defender as a viable option for his defence.

Spurs will have barely [any money](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip) to spend in the summer and the club are looking to sign free agents or organise swap deals to add depth in the squad. Meunier’s contract with PSG is [set to expire](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip) at the end of the season and the French champions have made him available on the market in the summer.

[Mourinho](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip) has reportedly already called the Belgian international in an attempt to persuade him to move to north London.

The right-back, who can also play in [midfield](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/104376/Show/Thomas-Meunier), is represented by [Pini Zahavi](https://talksport.com/football/632438/jose-mourinho-wages-contract-deal-earn-spurs-pochettino-super-agent-pini-zahavi/), who is widely credited with bringing Mourinho to England in the first place. The super-agent famously helped get [Neymar’s world-record transfer](https://talksport.com/football/632438/jose-mourinho-wages-contract-deal-earn-spurs-pochettino-super-agent-pini-zahavi/) from Barcelona to PSG over the line.

The 28-year-old played 16 games in Ligue 1 this season, supplying two assists, winning 1.7 tackles per game and averaging 1.1 interceptions per game ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/104376/Show/Thomas-Meunier)). He is currently valued at £21.6m via [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/thomas-meunier/profil/spieler/100986).

It is fair to say that the Lilywhites need to address the issues on the right flank, as Serge Aurier has [struggled for consistency](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip) this season. Indeed, the Ivorian has made a number of [high-profile mistakes](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8343579/Is-time-Spurs-Jose-Mourinho-jettison-23m-liability-Serge-Aurier.html) on and off the pitch so far, including breaching lockdown rules for a [third time](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8343579/Is-time-Spurs-Jose-Mourinho-jettison-23m-liability-Serge-Aurier.html) last month.

As it stands, Mourinho is on the hunt for a [new full-back](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip), and Meunier fits the profile of the type of player he is looking for. The Belgian is [close friends](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip) with his international teammate Toby Alderweireld, which could pave the way for a move to Tottenham.

However, [Daniel Levy faces competition](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip) from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United, although it seems [Spurs](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1296178/Tottenham-News-Thomas-Meunier-Talks-Liverpool-Man-Utd-Transfer-Rumours-Gossip) are leading the race to sign the PSG veteran.
