# Tottenham: Lilywhites set sights on Gelson Martins

**[Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/) have set their sights on AS Monaco forward Gelson Martins as Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas shares an update out of N17.**

### The Lowdown: Spurs still looking…

The Lilywhites are still actively looking for new additions in this transfer market before tonight’s on-rushing deadline with links having surrounded the likes of Wales international Daniel James.

However, as developments flood in throughout the day, goals for each club consistently change and it now looks as if Spurs are [eyeing alternative options to the winger.](https://twitter.com/SkySportsLyall/status/1565314604858851328)

This comes after the north Londoners completed [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) deals for Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie – not to mention the permanent capture of defender Cristian Romero.

### The Latest: Tottenham eye Martins move…

Indeed, according to reports, it appears Ligue 1 attacker Martins is now being targeted by sporting director Fabio Paratici and co.

[Sky Sports journalist Thomas](https://twitter.com/SkySportsLyall/status/1565314604858851328), sharing an update on Spurs’ transfer plans, now claims the Portugal international is ‘under discussion’ at the club.

[He explained](https://twitter.com/SkySportsLyall/status/1565314604858851328):

*“Exclusive: #Tottenham are considering their options for new forwards with Dan James unlikely, and one of the new names under discussion is #Monaco’s Gelson Martins. He’s keen to come to the Premier League.”*

### The Verdict: Get it done?

Martins was actually tipped for stardom at one point with Domingos Stanislau giving him quite the tag.

Indeed, the 27-year-old was heralded as [‘the future Cristiano Ronaldo’](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/recommended-ronaldo-inside-story-gelson-martins-liverpool-and-man-united-vie-his-transfer) by Benfica’s club chief last decade but it remains to be seen if he could rediscover such potential at Spurs.

The winger had a decent if unspectacular season last term, racking up [seven direct goal involvements in 24 starts](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/296576/History/Gelson-Martins) in Ligue 1, averaging 1.9 successful take-ons per game.

He certainly wouldn’t come in and bump the likes of Richarlison and Kulusevski down the pecking order, but perhaps his speed could be a useful asset off the bench.
