# Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs negotiating with Southampton over swap deal for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

**Tottenham Hotspur are holding talks with Southampton over a deal that would see Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg move to north London and Kyle Walker-Peters head in the opposite direction.**

Both clubs are [confident](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/16/spurs-and-southampton-in-talks-over-hojbjerg-swap-deal-with-walker-peters) that an agreement can be reached, as Jose Mourinho has identified Hojbjerg as the holding midfielder that he needs to rebuild Spurs’ midfield.

According to [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/16/spurs-and-southampton-in-talks-over-hojbjerg-swap-deal-with-walker-peters), as relayed by [@Daily\_Hotspur](https://twitter.com/Daily_Hotspur/status/1283769192756531200), the ex-Bayern Munich ace fits the type of profile that Tottenham are seeking.

Hojbjerg has played 31 games in [the Premier League](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/101859/Show/Pierre-Emile-H%C3%B8jbjerg) this season, supplying one assist, taking 1.3 shots, winning 2.5 tackles and completing 1.5 clearances per game on average (via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/101859/Show/Pierre-Emile-H%C3%B8jbjerg)).

Meanwhile, [Walker-Peters](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/16/spurs-and-southampton-in-talks-over-hojbjerg-swap-deal-with-walker-peters) has spent the past few months on loan at Southampton, where he has enjoyed himself so much at St Mary’s that he is keen to stay on a permanent basis.

However, the two players’ valuations are [proving to be a sticking point](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/16/spurs-and-southampton-in-talks-over-hojbjerg-swap-deal-with-walker-peters). Southampton had valued Hojbjerg at [£35m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/16/spurs-and-southampton-in-talks-over-hojbjerg-swap-deal-with-walker-peters) before nationwide lockdown but circumstances have now changed.

[\[freshpress-poll id=”309872″\]](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/[freshpress-poll%20id=%22309872%22])

[Ralph Hasenhuttl](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-news-target-pierre-emile-hojbjerg-warned-by-southampton-boss-a4459116.html) stripped the Dane of the captaincy after he refused to sign a new deal and he has even been left out of [the squad](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pierre-emile-hojbjerg/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/167799/verein/180) altogether in recent weeks.

Southampton are not prepared to spend heavily on Walker-Peters as he is still largely unproven in [the Premier League](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/16/spurs-and-southampton-in-talks-over-hojbjerg-swap-deal-with-walker-peters). As Hojbjerg only has one year left on his contract, the Saints will seek about [£25m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/16/spurs-and-southampton-in-talks-over-hojbjerg-swap-deal-with-walker-peters) for their former captain.

Spurs should be able to meet Southampton’s asking price in principle, as Daniel Levy splashed the cash to sign [Tanguy Ndombele](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48841318) last year.

Nevertheless, further questions will be raised about [Ndombele’s future](https://theathletic.com/1891033/) at the club if Hojbjerg ends up in north London in the summer.
