# Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs enter negotiations with AC Milan over a potential transfer for Serge Aurier

**Tottenham Hotspur have entered negotiations with AC Milan to sell Serge Aurier, according to [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/aug/03/danny-rose-open-to-tottenham-stay-and-would-love-to-play-for-club-again).**

Italian transfer guru [Fabrizio Romano](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/aug/03/danny-rose-open-to-tottenham-stay-and-would-love-to-play-for-club-again) revealed that Milan have approached Tottenham to sort out a potential transfer, although Jose Mourinho’s side must find a replacement before they can sell Aurier for [£20m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/aug/03/danny-rose-open-to-tottenham-stay-and-would-love-to-play-for-club-again) this summer.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino signed the [60-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/serge-aurier/profil/spieler/127032) Ivory Coast international from Paris Saint-Germain for £23m in [2017](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41081740) and he has become [Mourinho’s first-choice](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/aug/03/danny-rose-open-to-tottenham-stay-and-would-love-to-play-for-club-again) right-back ever since the Portuguese native succeeded Pochettino. However, everything hinges on whether or not the Lilywhites will be able to find a suitable alternative.

The 27-year-old was praised for [his performances](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/tottenham/tottenham-hotspur-ex-spur-lauds-absolutely-unreal-serge-aurier-after-his-tragic-loss/) following the death of his brother as he showed real courage and determination to play in the face of such adversity.

Nevertheless, he [struggled](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-hotspur-mourinho-needs-to-replace-serge-aurier-with-kyle-walker-peters-opinion/) for consistency last season and [his conduct](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-hotspur-mourinho-needs-to-replace-serge-aurier-with-kyle-walker-peters-opinion/) was called into question after he was caught breaking the government’s lockdown guidelines on multiple occasions.

It is fair to say that Aurier has had his ups and downs in north London, as he has often become [the poster boy](https://www.goal.com/en/news/does-tottenhams-aurier-deserve-the-criticism-he-gets/1eiw3m8s8t44x1i66sjczmtgps) for defeats, despite his best performances barely getting [mentioned](https://www.goal.com/en/news/does-tottenhams-aurier-deserve-the-criticism-he-gets/1eiw3m8s8t44x1i66sjczmtgps) at all.

His possible departure, coupled with the likelihood of [Kyle Walker-Peters](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-transfer-latest-kyle-walker-peters-wanted-permanet-deal-southampton/) leaving as well, would leave Mourinho short of options at right-back and he would have to race around to find a replacement in the transfer window.

The Portuguese has frequently [put his faith](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jose-mourinho/eingesetzteSpieler/trainer/781/plus/0?saison_id=&verein_id=148&liga=&wettbewerb_id=) in Aurier and it would be surprising if Daniel Levy cuts his losses in the summer. There are several [affordable options](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/right-backs-tottenham-target-summer-18703673) out there who are currently available but it would make most sense to keep the Ivorian as a backup, bearing in mind the busy schedule if Mourinho’s side can reach the Europa League group stage in the autumn.
