# Tottenham: Sergio Reguilon ‘set to join’ Atletico Madrid

**[Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/) defender Sergio Reguilon is ‘set to join’ Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan, according to the [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-reguilon-atletico-madrid-loan-b1021403.html).**

### The lowdown: Major interest

Having fallen out of favour at Tottenham this summer, the 25-year-old has been attracting plenty of attention in the transfer market, with multiple clubs willing to take the full-back off Spurs’ hands.

The Spain international was [left out](https://www.sportbible.com/football/antonio-conte-leaves-four-senior-players-out-of-tottenham-tour-squad-20220709) of the pre-season touring squad by Antonio Conte, a snub which more or less signalled that the ex-Real Madrid defender’s immediate future lies away from north London.

Following speculation linking him with [Fulham, Lazio](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11147607/Fulham-Lazio-talks-sign-Tottenham-left-Sergio-Reguilon-loan.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490) and [Barcelona](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwi9hfOuhen5AhUMY8AKHWxPDtQQFnoECAgQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.teamtalk.com%2Ftottenham-hotspur%2Fsergio-reguilon-transfer-barcelona-bullish-belief-daniel-levy-maximum-spurs-fee&usg=AOvVaw1vLw1ybHGKqCIFTCRmqhAN), Reguilon appears set for a return to the Spanish capital, but this time to his former employers’ rivals…

### The latest: Atletico calling

As per the [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-reguilon-atletico-madrid-loan-b1021403.html), Atletico are believed to be on the verge of landing the [six-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-reguilon/nationalmannschaft/spieler/282429/verein_id/3375) ace.

It’s claimed that Reguilon had been ‘deemed surplus to requirements’ in N17, training away from the first-team squad of late, and will therefore head back to Spain in order to obtain regular first-team football once again.

The report states that there will be ‘no buy option’ in the deal as Atletico replace [Nottingham Forest-bound](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/08/27/renan-lodi-become-nottingham-forests-18th-summer-signing-could/) Renan Lodi in their squad with the man who Alasdair Gold dubbed [‘phenomenal’](https://thisisfutbol.com/2020/10/blogs/premier-league/tottenham-hotspur-alasdair-gold-praises-sergio-reguilon/) upon first coming to Spurs two years ago.

### The verdict: Needs a fresh start

Ultimately, with Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic being [favoured](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tottenham-hotspur/leistungsdaten/verein/148) by Conte instead, it seems unlikely that Reguilon would get the sufficient game-time required for an experienced operator hoping to make it into Spain’s World Cup squad later this year.

Since joining Spurs, the [£22.5m-valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-reguilon/marktwertverlauf/spieler/282429) Spaniard has [scored twice and provided nine assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-reguilon/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/282429) in 67 outings for the north Londoners, appearing regularly if not weekly in their starting XI and posting respectable [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/362275/History/Sergio-Reguil%C3%B3n) ratings of 6.72 in his first season in N17 and 6.95 last term.

Still under contract until 2025 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-reguilon/profil/spieler/282429)), there remains every possibility that a successful loan spell at a club likeAtletico, where Champions League football is also on offer, could see Reguilon return to Tottenham and thrive further down the line.

For now, he needs a fresh start elsewhere, as his immediate Spurs future looks rather bleak.
