# Tottenham: Steve Hitchen suggests Graham Potter as possible managerial candidate

**Tottenham technical performance director Steve Hitchen has suggested that Graham Potter as a potential candidate to take over the vacant manager’s position at the club.**

### **Hitchen suggests Potter**

Jose Mourinho was sacked two weeks ago and Ryan Mason has [since taken over on an interim basis](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/12281025/ryan-mason-appointed-tottenham-interim-head-coach-following-jose-mourinho-sacking). However, it seems unlikely that he will be given the job permanently.

According to the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9535545/IAN-LADYMAN-Daniel-Levy-need-small-boss-achieve-big-Tottenham.html) journalist Ian Ladyman, Hitchen has suggested to chairman Daniel Levy that Potter be considered for the role.

### **Left-field**

Potter would seem to be a left-field appointment if Tottenham plump for him. Spurs have been linked with the likes of [Julian Nagelsmann](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9488417/Tottenham-identify-RB-Leipzig-boss-Julian-Naglesmann-target-Jose-Mourinho-replacement.html), Hansi Flick ([The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2021/04/30/tottenhams-search-new-manager-hits-buffers-top-targets-rule/)), Erik Ten Hag ([The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/apr/29/tottenham-target-ajaxs-erik-ten-hag-in-search-for-new-manager)) and [Rafael Benitez](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9508003/Tottenham-optimistic-Harry-Kanes-fitness-ahead-Carabao-Cup-final-Manchester-City.html) – managers who have coached in, and [occasionally won](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/uefa-champions-league/meistertrainer/pokalwettbewerb/CL), the Champions League.

The Brighton boss does not match that profile, his European pedigree limited to a [Europa League round of 32 run](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/graham-potter/leistungsdatenInternational/trainer/23954) with Ostersunds three years ago.

Having said that, Potter has earned plaudits from the likes of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for the way he has his Brighton team playing ([The Football Faithful](https://thefootballfaithful.com/guardiola-praise-scott-parker-graham-potter/)). The Seagulls may not have always managed to get the right results this season, but only six top-flight teams have had more shots on target per match, while they have averaged over 50% possession ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/8228/Stages/18685/TeamStatistics/England-Premier-League-2020-2021)).

At Tottenham, he would have a better squad and a bigger budget than at the Amex Stadium, while he should also come a lot cheaper than the other options being mooted. Potter is certainly someone who should at least be considered as Mourinho’s long-term successor.
