# Tottenham Hotspur: Toby Alderweireld chance of playing closer to home is ‘real’, claims father

**Speaking exclusively to Belgian newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen, via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/father-says-tottenham-players-chance-to-play-in-another-league-is-real-brother-wants-him-to-find-right-club/), the father of Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed that Tottenham’s long-serving ace plans to play closer to home and has already bought land in Ekeren – with the possibility of a contract renewal potentially looking slim.**

Alderweireld, who signed a new contract until 2023 in late December last year ([BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50865321#:~:text=Tottenham%20defender%20Toby%20Alderweireld%20has,ended%20speculation%20about%20his%20future.)), doesn’t look like he will be extending his stay beyond that time according to this huge hint from his father.

### Alderweireld plans next move?

Indeed, as per Gazet, the centre-back’s chance of playing closer to home is ‘[real’](https://sportwitness.co.uk/father-says-tottenham-players-chance-to-play-in-another-league-is-real-brother-wants-him-to-find-right-club/) if he hasn’t found a new club or been sold off before his contract expiry – with his brother also claiming he would ‘[love](https://sportwitness.co.uk/father-says-tottenham-players-chance-to-play-in-another-league-is-real-brother-wants-him-to-find-right-club/)‘ Alderweireld to return to Belgium.

Tottenham take on Royal Antwerp in the Europa League tonight, with the 6 ft 1 ace, of whom Paul Robinson said [‘he is a leader’](https://www.footballinsider247.com/robinson-exclusive-spurs-set-piece-expert-must-start-every-match-after-shock-axing/), speaking candidly in Spurs’ press conference last night over the regret of there being no Belgian supporters in the stadium.

Playing closer to home could be a real motivation for Alderweireld as per his family’s revelation, and Tottenham face losing him at some point in the near future.

### Transfer Tavern take

Lauded as [‘superb’](https://footballghana.com/jamie-redknapp-praises-toby-alderweireld-as-tottenham-push-for-the-title) value for money by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, the[102-cap international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/toby-alderweireld/nationalmannschaft/spieler/42710) has been a mainstay in the Spurs defence ever since he [signed for the club](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/33442272) back in 2015 from Atletico Madrid.

However, with the signing of Joe Rodon and potentially more defenders in future, Alderweireld’s future in the team looks set to fade – with the 31-year-old now reaching his twilight years.

Regardless, his presence behind the scenes as a leader and motivator will still be surely missed.
