# Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs have ‘no chance’ of signing Roma and Italy ace Nicolo Zaniolo this summer

**Tottenham Hotspur have ‘no chance’ of signing Nicolo Zaniolo from AS Roma this summer, according to [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1288954672410222593).**

[Tottenham](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-jose-mourinho-wants-nicolo-zaniolo-roma-transfers/) had been linked to Zaniolo long before Jose Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino last November, but [the Portuguese](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-jose-mourinho-wants-nicolo-zaniolo-roma-transfers/) wanted to succeed where his predecessor failed in the transfer window.

Writing in [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/30/tottenham-open-talks-with-inter-over-tanguy-ndombele-sale), the Italian transfer guru revealed that Roma have rejected their interest in the wonderkid as they have no intentions of letting him leave the Stadio Olimpico. [The Spurs manager](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-jose-mourinho-wants-nicolo-zaniolo-roma-transfers/) made it clear that he wanted to sign Zaniolo in the summer but [Mourinho](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-transfer-blow-roma-refusing-sale-zaniolo/) has been dealt a bitter blow as the Serie A club’s manager Paulo Fonseca has insisted that he is not up for sale because the 21-year-old is part of his plans.

After arriving at Roma from Inter Milan for [£4m](https://www.transfermarkt.com/nicolo-zaniolo/transfers/spieler/392085) in 2018, Zaniolo has been described as one of the [best players](https://sportwitness.co.uk/mourinho-wants-tottenham-spurs-target-unhappy-club-agent-flying-sort-situation-next-week/) of his generation, having broken into the first team and establishing himself as one of their key players in the process.

[\[freshpress-poll id=”312065″\]](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/[freshpress-poll%20id=%22312065%22])

The [five-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nicolo-zaniolo/profil/spieler/392085) Italy international has made 25 appearances in Serie A this season, scoring six goals, supplying one assist, taking 1.7 shots and successfully completing 2.2 dribbles per game on average (via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/332398/Show/Nicol%C3%B2-Zaniolo)).

The attacking midfielder, who can also operate in a more withdrawn central midfield role, has been compared to Liverpool legend [Steven Gerrard](https://theathletic.co.uk/1854044/2020/06/05/horncastle-zaniolo-roma-italy-serie-a/) and the Giallorossi claim that he is the heir-apparent to [Francisco Totti](https://theathletic.co.uk/1854044/2020/06/05/horncastle-zaniolo-roma-italy-serie-a/). However, Roma are in no rush to sell him and have slapped an asking price of [£50m](https://www.corriere.it/sport/20_luglio_19/zaniolo-vuole-restare-altro-anno-ma-fonseca-gelo-5d362a08-c9e8-11ea-a1ca-122fad3a9e00.shtml) on his head to ward off any potential suitors.

While he is surely a dream signing for Spurs, there is no way they would be able to afford him at the moment even if he were available in the transfer window.

After borrowing a huge [£175m](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-175m-bank-of-england-loan-daniel-levy/) loan from the Bank of England to cover the costs of these uncertain times, Daniel Levy has insisted that he will not be spending “[rivers of money](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/11720841/jose-mourinho-spurs-transfer-budget-slashed/)” before the start of next season and Mourinho will have to look elsewhere if he wants to sign a new [playmaker](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-jose-mourinho-wants-nicolo-zaniolo-roma-transfers/) in the summer.
