Former Tottenham Hotspur star Paul Stewart insists that the club need to keep spending on the back four after the signing of Cristian Romero from Atalanta.
The club have confirmed the deal to sign the central defender, strengthening Nuno Espirito Santo’s ranks in north London.
Romero has arrived on an initial loan deal, and Spurs have the option to buy him at the end of the deal for a fee of £42.5m, per Football.London’s Alasdair Gold.
Do Tottenham need to have a major overhaul this summer?
Spurs have also been heavily linked with Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who can play as both a centre-back and a right-back, and Stewart believes that further investment is required.
Indeed, he believes that only left-back Sergio Reguilon can be sure of his place of players who were in the squad at the start of the summer.
Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, Stewart said: “They need to spend a couple of hundred million on the back four to be able to compete in the Premier League, and I’m talking all the way across the back four.
“I like Reguilon but he’s been hot and cold but he’s the only one that I would possibly be looking at that may keep his place.”
