Tottenham: McGrath says Spurs are set to trigger Romero option -Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Rumours

Tottenham Hotspur ‘will continue their summer spend’ by triggering the purchase option in Cristian Romero’s loan deal from Atalanta, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Romero shines…

The Argentine, signed by sporting director Fabio Paratici after winning Serie A’s defender of the year award in 2020/2021, has been a revelation since joining Spurs last summer.

Romero averaged more tackles and interceptions per 90 than any Spurs player in the Premier League last season and ranked in as one of Antonio Conte’s top ten best-performing players by average match rating (WhoScored).

The 24-year-old, however, is still technically an Atalanta player with the Lilywhites having not yet taken up their purchase option to sign him.

The Latest: McGrath shares Romero update…

Now, taking to social media, journalist Mike McGrath of The Daily Telegraph has shared an update on this subject.

He claims that Spurs are set to trigger Romero’s buy-clause and sign the South American with his Telegraph piece stating the deal will be worth around £41 million.

McGrath explained:

“Tottenham will continue their summer spend by triggering option on Cristian Romero deal. He is currently playing as a loan.”

The Verdict: No brainer…

It’s about time Spurs opted to trigger the clause and you can argue that it was always going to happen based off Romero’s stunning debut campaign in England.

Spurs fans, do you remember who scored your first goal of the season against Man City?

The combative ace is likely to be a crucial player alongside the likes of Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet in Conte’s central defence this season and the north Londoners need to tie him down as soon as possible.
