According to odds from SkyBet, via HertsLive, Tottenham are second favourites to sign Watford striker Troy Deeney behind West Brom, who currently lead the way, with Spurs now tipped as contenders to land the 32-year-old as the club search for a striking back-up to Harry Kane.
As the last week of the transfer window gets into full flow, Spurs could be monitoring a plethora of attacking targets including Deeney, with reliable Football.London correspondent Alasdair Gold claiming that there are ‘others’ along with Habib Diallo, Arkadiusz Milik plus Benfica duo Haris Seferovic and Carlos Vinicius.
Should Spurs sign Troy Deeney?
No, better options out there
While the journalist didn’t clarify who could fall into this bracket of unnamed targets, it isn’t unreasonable to assume that Deeney could be one of them, with Sky Bet now claiming that Spurs are strong contenders for his signature.
The Hornets captain, currently valued at a meagre £5.85m by Transfermarkt, could certainly be a bargain option for Daniel Levy to consider given his experience in the English top flight.
Having scored 47 Premier League goals in total over his career after helping Watford to promotion in 2015, Deeney certainly wouldn’t need to adapt to life at Premier League level, but other star alternatives, like Milik for instance, could prove more enticing.
The £100,000-a-week Hornets ace could have to take a cut off those wages to be Kane’s understudy, even despite ex-Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino targeting him back in 2016, and it is unclear whether Deeney is seen as a priority target.
Regardless, given his short odds over a move to Tottenham, it wouldn’t be clever to completely rule it out.
