Speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton has tipped Spurs to make a shock swoop for Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke on loan with an option to buy – potentially capping off an excellent summer transfer window alongside various captures and the continued hunt for a star defender.
Benteke, despite failing to amass a noteworthy goalscoring run of form since his stellar 2016/2017 season at Selhurst Park, scoring just six Premier League goals since then, is now being tipped with a late move to Spurs despite the club having recently announced Carlos Vinicius.
Deadline day is right around the corner, with Tottenham now prioritising the swoop for a star centre-back to cap off what has been quite the summer window courtesy of chairman Daniel Levy.
Should Spurs sign Christian Benteke to join Carlos Vinicius?
Yes, three strikers better than two
No, completely pointless move
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Gareth Bale and Vinicius have already made moves to north London – either permanently or loan – but Hutton has now claimed Benteke in a latter deal may well be the ‘ideal’ signing.
“If they could get a loan, I’ve heard his wages are through the roof at Crystal Palace, so whether they’re going to try loan him and see how that works out, with a view to buy, that might be ideal,” the pundit explained to Football Insider.
“I think he’d be happy to play backup anyway, he’s in London anyway, it’s an easy move and he will still get game time.
“I’m not sure how much they would want to get him out or if Spurs would want to do that anyway so a loan would suit. He’s in London so it’s kind of ideal.”
Valued at just £9.45 million by Transfermarkt, Benteke could be another bargain option going forward alongside Vinicius and Harry Kane regardless of his recent strike record – especially considering the 6ft 3 powerhouse arguably fits Jose Mourinho’s mould of a physical presence up front.
Whether or not Levy adds another attacker to his already impressive Spurs collection remains to be seen, but it could be a shock late punt ahead of Monday’s 11pm cut off.
