According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have opened ‘preliminary talks’ to offer club captain Hugo Lloris a ‘blockbuster’ new contract as the club prepare for a 2020/2021 Champions League qualification push – with alleged negotiations now well and truly ‘underway’.
Jose Mourinho’s side, having already strengthened in key areas with the signings of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty, as well as 75-cap England international Joe Hart on a free transfer, are now reportedly prepared to offer Lloris a fresh contract in order to tie him down further.
Should Spurs offer Lloris a 'lucrative' new deal?
No, his current deal is fine
Indeed, despite still having two years left on his current deal, the club wish to hand Lloris a new lucrative extension on his current £100,000-per-week stay.
Since signing for Tottenham on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2012, putting pen to paper on a bargain £11.8 million move, the Frenchman has gone on to star for the club – making 325 appearances in all competitions over an eight-year spell so far (Transfermarkt).
His accolades, which include keeping 112 clean sheets in that time, make the transfer fee paid for Lloris look insignificant by comparison, and despite being 33-years-old, his current market value (£13.05 million) still eclipses the original cost to sign him nearly a decade ago.
Indeed, Lloris’ contributions for Spurs over the 2010s cannot be understated – with a past statement from ex-fan favourite boss Mauricio Pochettino highlighting why the club are allegedly keen to extend his stay.
After the shot-stopper helped Tottenham to a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in the Champions League group stages two seasons ago, Pochettino waxed lyrical over his capabilities – labelling the veteran as ‘fantastic’ and ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the world’ (The Guardian).
