Spurs have been tipped to lose out on transfer target Olivier Giroud by former top flight goalscorer Darren Bent.
The Chelsea ace was heavily linked with a move across London earlier this year and given his lack of game time under Frank Lampard so far in the 2020/21 term, in where he has not completed a full 90 minutes yet at Stamford Bridge, a move away for the France international next month may be on the cards.
Should Spurs sign Giroud?
Given that the Lilywhites have been strongly linked with a move for him in the past, Bent was asked as to whether he could see Giroud going to play under Jose Mourinho, to which he told Football Insider:
“I like Giroud, I think he’s a good player, but where does he go right now where he walks into someone’s top team?
“I mean, you’d go he’s not going to go to Liverpool, he’s not going to go to Spurs, he’s at Chelsea, he’s not going to go back to Arsenal, he’s not going to go to Leicester.
“For me, if he’s going to go somewhere and play week in, week out, I think he’s going to have to go abroad.”
Giroud can be ‘out of this world’ but he would not displace Kane
Giroud can be ‘out of this world’ on his day as THFC legend Glenn Hoddle rightfully pointed out after the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner scored four goals, including a perfect hattrick, away at Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.
However, it would take a lot for him to displace Harry Kane up top at the moment, as the England international captain has scored no fewer than 13 goals and made a further 11 assists in 16 games in all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).
The French striker may be seen as a back-up, but as Bent says, he would not move to North London if he is not guaranteed to play every week, so it seems unlikely that this rumoured deal will happen.
