According to a report by football.london journalist Alasdair Gold, Tottenham could be eyeing a potential future swoop for Benfica star Ruben Dias after his side’s failure to get past the Champions League qualifying rounds – and the 6ft 1 colossus is a player Jose Mourinho ‘really likes‘.
Dias, who was a pivotal figure for Benfica during the entirety of last campaign, starting 33 matches for the club over their 2019/2020 Liga NOS title challenge, is now attracting Spurs’ interest as they scour the market for defensive options.
Could Tottenham snap up Ruben Dias in future?
No, far too expensive
Mourinho apparently likes the look of Dias as a marquee signing and could be monitoring his situation at the Estádio Sport Lisboa e Benfica very closely – but the defender’s sky high £80 million release clause remains a huge obstacle and one to be put on the back burner.
While Gold has confirmed that the 23-year-old will be far too expensive snap up this window, a move for the 19-cap international star may not be out of the question in future – especially considering the fact he is highly rated and Mourinho is a huge admirer.
Defensively, Tottenham arguably look somewhat unstable, especially in the centre-back roles, with former midfielder Eric Dier often deployed in that position.
Even then, the Englishman looks ‘shaky’ as opposed to dominant, and the ever-rotating pair of Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld bring huge question marks over who should be preferred (football.london).
As a result, Spurs are now looking to snap up a towering defensive figure for more cover, with Dias mentioned alongside fellow target Kim Min-jae.
After securing a plethora of new recruits this transfer window, it will be interesting to see who Tottenham could sign before October 5.
