Speaking in a press conference, Jose Mourinho has reacted to news that Gedson Fernandes could be on his way back to Benfica – explaining the situation and revealing this past six months have been ‘really, really bad’ for both the player and Lilywhites.
Fernandes, who signed on a year-long loan deal in January, with Spurs having an obligation to snap him up permanently (Sky Sports), looks like he is set to return to Benfica as he is struggled for game time.
Jose Mourinho reacts to Fernandes situation
The Portuguese star was brought in as an emergency signing last season when Tottenham had mounting injury problems to cope with, but ever since Mourinho has had a fully fit squad to choose from, more or less, Fernandes has been reduced to the fringes.
“The situation is sad because he was out of the Europa League list and by being out of that list reduced immediately a chance of nine matches,” explained the Spurs boss.
“So these six months become really, really bad for us and for him and on top of it he’s a kid, it’s incredible what I’m going to say, but since he arrived he didn’t miss one single minute of one training session so he becomes even in low levels of happiness or motivation he’s managing to be a very good professional.
“So hopefully better days will come for him.”
Transfer Tavern take
As Spurs potentially prepare for life without the option of Fernandes, Mourinho has claimed recent months have proved difficult for the player and club.
The midfielder now looks like he could leave in January, with supporters maybe wondering what might have been.
