According to an exclusive courtesy of Get French Football News, Tottenham approached Ligue 1 giants Lyon to sign in-form striker Moussa Dembele last week and he could have been close to a sensational Premier League move – but Daniel Levy’s approach was swiftly rebuffed.
Would you have preferred Dembele over Vinicius?
Yes, he is amazing
No, Vinicius is class
As deadline day continues, with Tottenham allegedly still in ongoing negotiations to sign star Serie A defender Milan Skriniar, news has now emerged that the club could have possibly made their transfer window even better.
Indeed, as per this update, Spurs approached Lyon to sign Dembele on loan with an obligation to buy last week before the offer was rejected – prompting Levy to turn to Benfica star Carlos Vinicius in apparent ‘frustration‘ over collapsed talks.
Having already secured deals for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty, Gareth Bale, Sergio Reguilon, Joe Hart and Vinicius – this update that Dembele could have signed for Spurs in the latter man’s stead may have Lilywhites wondering what might have been.
Scoring 20 goals in all competitions in France last campaign, the attacker certainly has the pedigree to succeed in England’s top flight – especially considering he has been described as producing at a ‘different level’ whilst possessing a ‘first class’ attitude (Sunday Post via Goal).
He has also been mentioned in the same breath as footballing icons Thierry Henry, Ronaldo and Raul by Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane – lofty praise for an attacker who is still just 24-years-old.
Even though Spurs have landed a more-than capable alternative in Vinicius, signing Dembele would also have been quite the brilliant coup.
