Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports regular Paul Robinson has been baffled by alleged Spurs talks to sign Stuttgart ace Nicolas Gonzalez in the summer – with the pundit saying he would be ‘surprised’ if Daniel Levy and co manage to land him.
Gonzalez, who has turned heads with his performances in the Bundesliga this season, scoring five goals in just six starts so far, has apparently enticed Tottenham’s interest as well – with more than one source claiming that Spurs have opened talks for his signature.
The Athletic stated preliminary talks have commenced over signing the £26.6 million-rated Gonzalez, meanwhile transfer journalist Nicolo Schira reaffirmed that Spurs are in negotiations with the player’s agent.
Robinson baffled by Gonzalez talks
Fabrizio Romano, recently speaking to the Last Word on Spurs podcast very recently, branded him an ‘amazing talent’ – with Spurs now in talks for his signature as per these recent developments.
However, speaking to Football Insider, Robinson believes that this should be far from a priority for Spurs – going on to say he’d be ‘surprised’ if the Lilywhites do a deal.
“They’re gonna have to spend a really big fee to improve what they’ve got,” explained the pundit.
“The way that they play, they rarely use an out-and-out winger. They play with the number 9 at the top and then three in behind. And those three in behind rotate and change positions.
“So for that to be a priority or to be pushed through, I’d be surprised.”
Transfer Tavern take
Amid financial uncertainty, the former Tottenham shot stopper could be right in his claim this should be far from the forefront of Levy’s mind.
Time will tell whether Spurs do eventually manage to land him, but if they take the plunge, he could be a hugely talented addition.
