Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has tipped Swansea City defender Joe Rodon to sign for Spurs before tomorrow’s deadline – which could potentially be a warning sign for makeshift centre-back Eric Dier.
Will Eric Dier still find game time with Joe Rodon's signing?
No, he'd be finished
Dier, who has been utilised by manager Jose Mourinho in that position for Spurs, could face omission from the first team with Rodon’s arrival – at least according to a subtle hint from Robinson.
The 26-year-old, who started 15 matches for Tottenham last season, most of them as part of their back four, could face a tough time making Mourinho’s starting eleven if the Welshman is signed before 5pm on Friday.
Robinson sends Dier warning
Indeed, according to Robinson, the transfer ‘tells you a lot’ about Dier – with the pundit hinting Mourinho would potentially rather have a natural centre-back pairing.
If his signing does come to fruition, there appears to be little room in midfield for the Englishman, especially given Spurs’ in-form trio of Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg trio which seems to be working wonders.
In their last outing, Spurs dismantled Man United 6-1 at Old Trafford with the midfield trio – and fan favourite Giovani Lo Celso’s return from injury could also push Dier further down the pecking order.
Speaking to Football Insider, whilst tipping Rodon for a late move, Robinson hinted the England international could be in trouble.
“That transfer tells you a lot about Eric Dier, the fact that they are looking for another centre half,” explained the pundit.
“It is a position that they have needed to strengthen in for a while.
“Joe Rodon has been touted for a move to Spurs and I think that is a move that will get pushed over the line before the deadline. He is on international duty this week but I am confident that Joe Rodon will be a Spurs player by Friday.”
Transfer Tavern take
The 22-year-old could become Spurs’ seventh signing of what has been a fruitful last two months, and if a deal does manage to be completed, Mourinho will have three natural centre backs at his disposal and could opt for them over Dier.
While Rodon has been largely tipped as one for the future, this could spell danger for the Spurs colossus’ long term stay in north London, especially considering the abundance of quality in his natural position.
Despite former club favourite Ledley King lauding him as ‘exceptional’, Dier could still face a battle for consistent game time if Rondon is signed.
